USPA NEWS - Jack Kanack has dedicated himself to being a Weather Observer for over three and a half decades.



Receiving The Thomas Jefferson Award.
As a life long North Tonawanda, New York resident, Jack Kanack has been a recipient of some prestigious awards from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration´s (NOAA) National Weather Service for his over three and a half decades as a Weather Observer. In all types of weather conditions and everyday, it has been his objective to collect and distribute meteorological information. The city has even named a day for him to honor this longevity.

One such award is the Thomas Jefferson Award for outstanding service to the Cooperative Weather Observer program. He has recorded high and low temperatures, rainfall, snowfall and snow depth since April 1, 1982, including during a world famous October snow storm. Kanack is active in his community, including as a volunteer at SUNY Buffalo State College (BSC), as a mentor and tutor for students in the meteorology program, and has helped launch a weekly campus radio show about weather. He is also a 1983 BSC graduate. When asked how he feels about his longevity accomplishments, Kanack said he appreciated all of his honors and hopes he can keep being a Weather Observer for as long as possible.
